Ammonia nitrogen monitors are mainly used to measure the ammonia nitrogen content in water, which helps to evaluate the pollution and "self-purification" status of water bodies. Ammonia nitrogen in water refers to ammonia in the form of free ammonia, which mainly comes from the decomposition products of nitrogen-containing organic matter in domestic sewage by microorganisms, industrial wastewater such as coking synthetic ammonia, and farmland drainage. When the ammonia nitrogen content in water is high, it is toxic to fish and also harmful to humans to varying degrees. Therefore, the ammonia nitrogen content is an important indicator to characterize water pollution.

The basic principle of the ammonia nitrogen monitor is that the water sample is heated and distilled in a slightly alkaline expelling liquid, and the released ammonia gas is absorbed by the absorption liquid. Methyl red is used as an indicator, and the ammonium in the absorption liquid is titrated with a hydrochloric acid standard solution. The photoelectric reaction is used to indicate the arrival of the end point, and then the amount of ammonia nitrogen in the water sample is calculated by a formula based on the consumption of the hydrochloric acid standard solution, and the result is displayed on the display.
